Prompt: According to Chapter 11 of American Government, what is descriptive representation? Which of the demographics in Figure 11.13 is the most surprising or otherwise interesting to you and why? Do you believe that descriptive representation is necessary to ensure that minorities (whether religious, ethnic, or otherwise) are properly represented in government or do you believe that descriptive representation, while symbolic, is not necessarily the most important factor in electing a member to Congress? How does the Korematsu (1944) case and the internment of Japanese Americans suggest about the extent of the president’s war powers? Prompt: Using Chapter 13 of American Government, explain the difference between judicial activism and judicial restraint. Of the two, which do you tend to support and why? Give a specific example of an issue (abortion, same-sex marriage, or other issues that have come before the court – you can revisit Chapters 4 and 5 that review a lot of cases) and state why you would advocate for judicial activism or restraint on this issue. If you cannot choose one over the other, be sure to give an example of activism you support and why and an example of restraint you support and why.
