LASER WELDING

Abstract

Laser welding is one of the most utilized joining techniques in many industry sectors. Laser welding is used to merge two pieces of a specific material into one solid piece. Although laser welding started in the 20th century, it is also one of the most technologically advanced and still improving welding techniques. Its technological advancements, such as faster and more powerful hardware and software, lead to a higher completion rates and more precise job. Those advancements also made laser welding a more affordable process.

Laser Welding

Laser welding is an old technique that dates from 1967 but is one of the most advanced joining methods today. The advancements in laser welding have led to several advantages in precision, temperature and materials.

First, laser welding is a very precise technique. This precision allows a more accurate welding of very small pieces, which can be crucial for determined industries such as the jewelry industry.

Second, laser welding uses a low heat application. As SPI Laser state, “The fact Laser welding technology uses a low heat application (Table 1), minimizes the distortion of the components.” (SPI Lasers, 2018)

Third, laser welding works with many different materials such as carbon steel, aluminum, precious metals, etc. (Table 1) This makes laser welding a cost-effective machine because it allows to work with different materials with the same machine.

Lastly, laser welding improves the productivity as it works at a fast rate with a wide variety of materials. The improvement in productivity and the increase in quality also makes laser welding a more affordable welding technique.

Conclusion

Laser welding produces highly precise results even in vary small pieces, which significantly reduces the error margin and the cost associated with the errors. Precision in core in every industry but the jewelry and medical field benefit the most from the precision of laser welding because both industries work with extremely small pieces and can’t afford to make any mistakes. Also, because laser welding a low heat application and therefore, the area where the heat is applied doesn’t get damaged and restoration is not needed. Moreover, the fact that laser welding is a technique that works with a wide variety of materials helps industries save money. That is because they don’t need different equipment or machinery to work with different materials.
